Chapter 12

"I'm sorry about Mia," said Riley for the fifth time that night.

I don't know why he was apologizing for his daughter. She could apologize for herself. Besides, Layla had ripped into her enough for all of us. No need for Riley to grovel.

There was a lot to like about the guy my sister chose to marry. He loved the fuck out of her which was most important. And he was a great father.

But for fuck's sake, he was a pussy.

Handle your kids and deal with your own business. But he was a financial genius. I'd started in this city with nothing to my name and Riley had managed to take all my dirty money and turn it into legal investments that was now making me very profitable returns. So, he had his uses.

I didn't have time to deal with Mia's shit when Layla had already done it so eloquently.

"What did she mean?" asked Mia hesitantly once Layla had run off.

"She didn't grow up with the luxuries you have." I casually continued eating the delicious pastelón.

Mia's fingers were absently scrolling through her phone, but her brows were furrowed in concern. She might be spoiled, but she wasn't a bad kid. Just too sheltered to realize how good she had it. "Like she was middle class?"

I set my utensils down and pushed away from the table. "Try not eating for a day and see how you feel. It was like that. Riley?"

I strode towards where I knew his office was and moved to sit in his chair. He followed and didn't make a sound about me taking over even as I willed him to grow a pair of balls.

"What can I help you with, sir?"

We were fucking family and he still called me sir. "I need a property to stay at that has no association with the company. I need it tonight."

He nodded and twisted his laptop around without asking me to move out of his chair.

"Does this have to do with the girl?"

"Yes." I didn't offer him any more information.

"Are you running from something?"

"I'm always running from something. Want to be more specific?"

"Did you bring shit to my door by bringing her here?"

That was the thing about Riley. He was useless when it came to himself, but he would grow a backbone when it came to his family, which was actually my family. I couldn’t blame him for wanting to keep them safe. "This time of year, I hear Hawaii is nice. I bet the girls would love a surprise trip."

"What the fuck, Raphael?"

"The people after Layla have connections in unexpected places. I didn't want to make a phone call. I didn't want to send an email. I wanted a nice personal conversation with someone I can trust."

And Riley, the spineless twat he could be, was trustworthy. And he was family.

"How far do you want to go?"

"Not far. I want to be close if I need to get back."

He nodded as his fingers started to run across the keyboard. After a few minutes, he pulled out a phone and made a call.
